Paul E. Borgman, Chief Executive Officer
Paul, a co-founder of Smoothstone, leads Smoothstone's strategic planning, financial and sales organizations. He has successfully founded, operated and sold a number of high growth companies including ViperLink, the first high-speed wireless Internet access provider in the United States; B-Dry Waterproofing Systems; a successful vegetable oil refining business; and a data center and managed services company. He has a vast range of executive level experience in leading the marketing, sales, operations and strategic functions in companies moving from start-up through their fast growth phase. Paul was also Vice President of the asset-based lending and leveraged buyout group for a leading regional bank. Paul attended the University of Kentucky, received a BS in Economics from the University of Louisville and an MBA from Bellarmine University.
Jeff M. Wellemeyer, President and Chairman
Jeff brings tremendous technical expertise and innovation to Smoothstone IP Communications. In addition to developing Smoothstone's centralized delivery platform and creating the concept behind a centralized delivery of PBX services, he has founded several companies and launched numerous technical products into the marketplace. Beginning in 1991, he created TeleVoice - the first solid state residential voicemail system. In 1993, he created a product for the casino industry that keeps tracks of house banks by using a series of laser and reflective sensing devices. In 1994 he developed VirtualPAY, the Internet's first billing and payment lockbox and then sold it to National Processing Company (NYSE: NAP) in 1996. This system provided Internet payment capabilities for customers of Mobil Oil, First USA VISA, and Sunoco. Mr. Wellemeyer developed ViperLink in 1997, enabling the delivery of the first high-speed wireless Internet access in the United States. In 1999 ViperLink was sold to Paul Allen backed Darwin Networks, where he served as CTO founding Teledvance (now Smoothstone) in 2000.
Shelly Godfrey, Chief Operations Officer
Shelly is one of Smoothstone's founding members and has been largely responsible for the development of its product deployment, implementation, and back end operational support systems. Shelly began her technical development career by implementing a national sales force automation system for the merchant card and transaction processing division of National City Bank. In 1996, as VP of Emerging Technologies for National Processing Company (NYSE: NAP), Shelly worked to develop the VirtualPAY System, the Internet's first billing and payment lockbox system designed to facilitate online payments from millions of consumer customers of Mobil Oil, First USA VISA, and Sunoco. In 1999, Shelly went to Darwin Networks where she was responsible for rollout of Computer Associates Unicenter TNG network operations and control technology. Later she served as Director of Engineering at Darwin, where she was tasked with operational responsibility of the engineering group, including national backbone infrastructure deployment, metropolitan wireless communications network build out, and research and development along with sales engineering.
Jon Jorgl, Chief Development Officer
Jon brings extensive operating, sales, and transactional experience to his role at Smoothstone. At Smoothstone, Jon is responsible for strategic partnerships and corporate development. Prior to Smoothstone, Jon served as EVP of Corporate Development of WestCom, the leading provider of trader voice services to the global financial community, until the company was sold to IPC Systems in 2007. During his career, Jon served a number of roles including General Manager and EVP of Sales and Operations where he was responsible for the acquisition and integration of six companies in the US, Europe and Asia. Jon also served as a SVP of Sales with Global Crossing through its acquisition of IXnet, a global network provider serving the financial community which he helped take public in 1999.
Chuck Piazza, Senior Vice President
Chuck brings thirteen years in the telecommunications industry to his role at Smoothstone. At Smoothstone, Chuck is responsible for leading the company's channel partner development process. Prior to joining Smoothstone, Chuck held senior level positions in direct and indirect sales with Lightyear Network Solutions. While at Lightyear, Chuck played a key role in strategic growth and development of numerous direct sales offices in the country's northeast region. In addition, Chuck was responsible for driving nationwide agent activity, while promoting the company's business strategies and increasing revenue-generating opportunities.
Randy McGraw, Vice President of Solution Design Engineering
Randy has served as Smoothstone's Vice President of Solution and Design Engineering since December of 2004. Prior to coming to Smoothstone, Mr. McGraw was Director of Operations and Information Technology for First Residential Mortgage Network, developing and implementing its technical infrastructure to become one of the largest Internet-based residential lenders. Randy's background in data network design began at Andersen Consulting (now Accenture) working with various Fortune 500 companies on a global basis and continued on at AEGON USA. Mr. McGraw received a BS in Management Information Systems from Western Kentucky University.
Chris J. Parker, Director of Network Infrastructure Engineering
As the Director of Network Infrastructure Engineering at Smoothstone, Chris brings a wealth of experience to the company. He began his career in 1995 as the Technical Coordinator for Internet Access and Training Program (IATP), working for the U.S. Department of State to provide the Internet access and training through a network of access sites in 11 countries. Mr. Parker spent 3 years in Uzbekistan (a former Soviet Republic), building the network infrastructure allowing access to the Internet for the first time. This included the deployment of VSAT satellite earth stations linking the former Soviet Republic to Moscow, Russia, and the deployment of wireless broadband networks interconnecting the universities and major government centers. Upon his return to the U.S. he joined ViperLink, where he was responsible for the metropolitan wireless network infrastructure. In 1999, when ViperLink was acquired by Darwin Networks, he served as the Director of Network Infrastructure building Darwin's national broadband data communications network. Mr. Parker holds a degree from Rhodes College, as well as some of the highest certifications awarded by Cisco Systems.
