Former Brown & Williamson Headquarters to become “Smoothstone Center”
LOUISVILLE, Ky (January 17, 2007) — Smoothstone IP Communications, the leading provider of enterprise–class communication solutions nationwide, today announced its signing of an 8–year, multi–million dollar lease agreement with the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company for the former Brown & Williamson headquarters space in the Brown & Williamson Tower.
The new “Smoothstone Center” will occupy nearly 45,000 sq. ft. of Class A space, including the tower´s 2nd and 3rd floors and contiguous space in two adjacent buildings of the 4th Street Live complex. Construction will begin this week. When completed in March, Smoothstone Center will include the company´s corporate headquarters (relocated from Main Street), an Executive Briefing Center and a Network Operations and Control Center. Smoothstone is also building a 7,000 square foot, raised–floor, fault-tolerant Data Center nearby (exact location not disclosed for security reasons) to house its data processing and networking systems.
“We are thrilled to have found a location that meets our very specialized needs, right in our hometown,” said Paul Borgman, Smoothstone´s CEO and co-founder. “When it´s completed, this facility will showcase Smoothstone´s emergence as an entirely new kind of managed communication services company — the first combination professional services firm, equipment vendor and carrier.”
Smoothstone is moving to this larger facility because of its recent, explosive growth. The company has quadrupled its Louisville employee base over the last 2 years and now plans to hire an additional 75 employees. Most of these new jobs will be very technical, from entry–level network engineers to advanced programming and infrastructure design engineers.
“This facility´s technical capabilities will be state–of–the–art and a real tribute to Louisville as a home for fast growing, high technology companies,” said Jeff Wellemeyer, Smoothstone´s CTO and co–founder. “In addition to expanding our capabilities to monitor and control our own network and our clients´ entire communications infrastructures 24/7, our Network Operations and Control Center will have a glass viewing area, so visitors to Smoothstone and to 4th Street Live will be able to see our engineers serving our clients. This facility will undoubtedly cement Smoothstone as the best place for information technology–oriented people to work in the region.”
