Smoothstone Announces Cloud-Based Disaster Recovery Solution for Avaya SIP Trunking Clients
LOUISVILLE, KY (March 23, 2010) – Smoothstone, the leading provider of cloud-based enterprise unified communications applications, announces Smoothstone DRS - the first Disaster Recovery solution built exclusively for Avaya Unified Communications environments.
DRS is an enhancement to Smoothstone’s SIP trunking services, providing a sophisticated, high-availability platform designed to deliver an unprecedented level of survivability to Avaya solutions deployed at enterprise locations worldwide.
“Most enterprises struggle with the costs and complexities of providing a full disaster recovery plan for their Avaya IP communications infrastructure,” said Jeff Wellemeyer, Smoothstone’s Chief Technology Officer. “Typically, we see deployments that are based around a single call control system, located in a corporate office, that are significantly lacking in resiliency. Or, we see a geographically distributed cluster with the inbound/outbound connections using media gateways that, in most cases, have no redundancy.”
DRS is an integrated suite of cloud-based call control and unified communications tools designed to allow an enterprise to define the policies and procedures by which voice traffic will be handled during any form of outage. Smoothstone DRS provides survivability, regardless of the interruption, from a temporary disruption of calls due to a local carrier, circuit or power outage, to a LAN or network failure, or a full-scale catastrophic event or natural disaster. Based on predetermined policies, calls to a company’s main inbound numbers can be routed to alternate office locations, directed by an automated attendant or queued for processing by available personnel. Calls to individual extensions or direct inward dial numbers can be forwarded to a user’s mobile phone or home phone, or sent to voice mail.
The need for DRS does not take a catastrophic event. “A lot of the initial interest for this technology has been in hurricane-prone areas, where DRS can take over call control in a matter of seconds,” said James Whitemore CMO at Smoothstone, “but for many IT departments, DRS will be used most often when they take IP communications systems off-line for maintenance or upgrade. It delivers on the promise of never missing another call.”

About Smoothstone DRS
The DRS platform includes a full range of highly-integrated applications, from call routing and automated attendant to voice mail and geographic-based call routing—distributing calls to backup locations based on the location of the caller. DRS allows an enterprise organization to deliver on “five nines” availability, regardless of the organization’s Avaya IP communications infrastructure. When integrated with Smoothstone’s advanced PSTN/SS7 call routing infrastructure, DRS is capable of delivering an unparalleled level of redundancy and survivability.
